Make sure you power down your unit a few hours prior to packing.  Use color-coded tape to identify each cable and plug in hole on the stereo unit for setting back up. Check your CD manual to see whether you need to tighten screws that will keep internal components from shifting. If you have a turntable, tape down the "platter" that the record sits on. Also tape the arm to the rest. Also tape the plastic lid to the unit. Place all components and system in original or double box. Don't bundle components together.  Seal box and mark accordingly.
